Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact sport that involves 7 or 5 players on each side of the team. It is a mixed-gender sport and also an emerging sport people will get to know about. The main goal of this sport is to score points in the opponent’s end zone by passing a ‘flying disc’. The player holding the flying disc can not move from its position but with the help of swinging his/her hands can pass the disc to other teammates. There was this tournament hosted on 9th January 2021 where many players around Surat came to participate and I was also one of those players.
The Learning Outcomes which I’ve demonstrated are LO1, LO2, LO4, LO5, and LO7.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth- It is to be heard that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses based upon their ability. Some of my strengths include having height advantage, experience in the sport for about 3-4 years, and also knowledge about the sport and its rules. Having knowledge and experience of the sport makes me know some great strategies that can be applied to win both stages when the play is offensive and defensive. Some of my weaknesses include low stamina, low speed, and remembering the rules.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills- When there is a HAT tournament, there are no fixed teams and the teams keep changing every match. To coordinate with different players every different match is a challenging task to take up. But there is also a benefit to this side that you get to each other and take advantage of their own benefits in the game for eg:- If a person has a good amount of stamina then he/she can be used more in the play to score or to defend the point.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience- By coming to the HAT tournament, it is evident that I’ve shown commitment. Also on the day of the tournament, I did not have any of my own transport so I called around 5-6 friends of mine and 1 of them took me to the tournament. One more thing that while the tournament was going on, I had an ankle twist because of some play while playing the match, then to I played another match because my team needed me and I recovered myself somewhat by applying ice on the injury.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively- Working collaboratively and communicating effectively with each other leads to better outcomes whether it’s in the form of anything. Ultimate frisbee is a team sport that involves better communication with other teammates when a match is going on. If there is no communication then it may happen that my teammate throws the disc somewhere else rather than where it was intended to be thrown.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions- As Ultimate frisbee is a non-referee sport, there are several conflicts when a foul is called so during that situation, ethics plays an important role in whether you know the rule properly or not or whether the foul committed by you or the opponent is right or wrong.
To conclude, whatever I experienced during this tournament, was out of many other tournaments I’ve played before. Also, it could be possible that many others like me got to experience the same thing that I had experienced. This experience has taught me that communicating with others is one of the most important factors, which can lead to victory or you’d say winning a match. Definitely, every sport requires specific skills to be known which also, again, leads to victory but as said earlier, communicating and working cooperatively is one of the key factors.
