Gardening (Service)

I have always loved plants, flowers, and foliage, but my house didn’t have many, so my mother and I started planting various plants and flowers during the lockdown. I chose to do it to do something good for the environment and also to have fun doing it. I thought it was my responsibility as a caring citizen to do something beneficial for the environment. After planting, I regularly maintained and watered them.

During the course of this project there were some learning outcomes achieved like LO3, LO4, LO6 and LO7.

LO3 : Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

Gardening is not an easy job, you need to give the right amount of water, plant seedlings at the right time of year, and care for each plant as it requires. I had to organize and plan ahead of time which plants I could plant depending on the weather and make sure I put in the necessary time gardening. I’m an organized person in general so it wasn’t very difficult for me to plan this experience. I gave it a set schedule each day to make it a regular one, which made it easier for me to make sure I was looking after the plants.

LO4 : Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

Dedication, perseverance and responsibility are the pillars of gardening, one cannot forget to water the plants, give them sunlight, or forget about their medicines, or it can cause the leaves to break and the plants to die completely. Showing perseverance and commitment is one of the most important skills. It is crucial that you be able to persevere in whatever you learn. This helps develop challenging skills that have a longer learning curve. Commitment also teaches you not to give up so quickly.

LO6 : Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

This experience deals with two Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Action and Life on Land.I am aware that planting some trees won’t reverse the effects of climate change, but it’s a step closer. Taking the initiative is the only way to do it. With this, make it clear that we can’t expect anyone else to take action, or anyone else to cut the plastic or plant trees. This experience made me realize that climate change is a bigger problem than I thought and that we need to take more steps towards a sustainable lifestyle and future.

LO7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Choosing to plant and care for plants is a healthy and wise decision because it has physical health benefits, cleaner environmental benefits, and mental health benefits. I not only benefit from this myself, but also my family and my neighbors.

To conclude, The attributes of the learner profile that I displayed in this experience were Caring and Knowledgeable. Knowledgeable as I got more knowledge and understanding about plants, transpiration, transportation, medicines that plants require, etc. Finally and most importantly, Caring as I have taken care of all plants and their needs myself. I wish to continue this practice of planting trees and also take other steps such as reduction of plastic usage and waste management in order to save the environment.
