Cricket is a sport that I have heard a lot about but never actually played, therefore I decided to take part in a Cricket tournament. I along with a few of my friends created a team of 8 and played a friendly match as none of us actually knew how to play cricket before the experience.
LO 1: Identify their own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Even though I have never played cricket before it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, because I play other sports like badminton and basketball on a regular basis so I can learn a new sport easily. However, I don’t really have a good stamina, and cricket being a sport where you need a lot of stamina, I found myself worn out during batting. Bating wasn’t as difficult as bowling for me, I was constantly throwing wild bowling balls.
LO2: Demonstrates that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Trying a new sport is a challenge in itself, I was not aware of the rules and regulation as well as sport specific vocabulary, hence sometimes I found myself confused when someone said it is an over or clean bolt. After the friendly tournament, I understood the sport very well as well as the importance of teamwork in it. The tournament almost lasted for 2-3 rounds so I was exhausted, but I also developed a lot of stamina and strength.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Playing cricket requires teamwork and cooperation, so sometimes it is possible that there will be conflict among the team members like if someone misses a catch the team starts criticizing each other. We all as a team faced such problems but we realised that cooperation, communication and teamwork is the only key to win. I also learned working collaboratively how to cope with winning and losing. After this experience I have definitely learned working in a team and listening to everyone and communicating with them my point of view.
LO7: Recognize and consider ethics of choice and action
One ethical concern as a participant was to gather at a venue for a long time where social distancing won’t always be followed and risks of catching the virus would increase. COVID being a part of our lives we all participants decided to wear masks at all times and maintain social distance except while playing. I personally avoided engaging in a group of more than 4 to 5 people and sanitized my hands every hour. I believe that I maintained social distancing , wearing masks and other COVID protocol in the most religious manner which made my experience risk free to some extent.
To conclude, taking part in this experience helped me a lot in terms of building my stamina, listening to others and working together in order to win is very important. It was a very fun experience to play a completely different sport.
