Learning a new language: French

I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, and since French is one of the most widely spoken languages of the world, I thought learning it would be a great way to introduce myself to a new culture. Also, I plan to go to college in Canada, where French is the second-most spoken language, so it might come in handy sometime.

A few years ago, I had purchased some textbooks and beginner-level coursebooks for French, but I never actually got around to learning it because I could never make enough time to study sincerely. This year, when I was stuck at home with nothing to do, I decided to finally open those books and teach myself French with the help of the textbook exercises and some YouTube videos.

Learning Outcomes:

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

It was a very challenging experience to learn a new language that I knew absolutely nothing about by myself. Often while reading, I’d be confused about what a word means in english, when or when to not add accents and symbols over the letters when spelling a difficult word, and how to pronounce certain words. However, some YouTube videos and Google Translate came to my rescue and cleared my doubts. I watched a french movie with english subtitles and learned many casual words and phrases used in everyday conversations.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

And

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance

Learning a new language is not something one can do fast and easily. I had to be proactive and take a few hours out of my day to watch tutorials and practice. I had to make it a part of my schedule, but as school started and we got closer to deadlines and tests, it became difficult to practice as regularly as I used to. To fix this problem, I decided to study French on Saturdays and Sundays. Even though I don’t practice as much anymore, revising on the weekends helped me remember a lot of things.
