CAS Experience- Giving food to the homeless

Giving food to the homeless is an initiative of me and my friends in society. Because the pandemic is a financial crisis for everyone, it affects people below the poverty line and low income the most. And as a result, it is very difficult for people to buy even basic groceries. Once my friends and I went out and saw a family begging for food they hadn’t eaten in 2 days, so we decided to feed them and their smiles were priceless. This smile made us so happy that we decided to give homeless people every weekend for 2 months. Every weekend we would go out to buy food like vada pav or a 100-gram bag each of groceries like wheat, rice, and dal. And then we go to different places where we find homeless people and we give them grain or food and then we enjoy the happiness on their faces that they have after they have received the food.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

One of the many challenges that I faced in my previous cooking experience was the least amount of food that I had to distribute to those in need. This difficulty was overcome with the ability to work together, with 5-6 friends with me we were able to buy a lot of food to give to the homeless and needy. Also, the benefit of working together was having a large number of people that we could provide food for, and we were able to motivate each other and take time off from any busy schedule to serve the community, to give back to the community.

Learning Outcome 6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The subject of global concern is zero hunger and poverty, 122 million jobs have been lost in India due to the Covid19 pandemic and up to 190 million Indians go to bed with food. To address this problem, my friends and I decided to distribute food to those who have been laid off due to the pandemic or who do not have enough money to feed them, as God has been so kind to us that our family had fun during the lockdown and not financial problems.

Learning Outcome 7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ethics played a very important role in this experience, as I donated the food, it was my responsibility to bring it to those who really needed it, not to those who acted as needed. I saw on the news that there was a blind man who was pretending to be blind so that people would feel sorry for him and buy things from him, so I had to figure out who really need them in order to survive the pandemic. Also, in one of the places I went to distribute food, there were a lot of people and although we had a lot of food, it still wasn’t enough and that is why I give food out on the basis of the family’s condition.
