CAS experience-Food distribution

I initiated this experience along with a peer to distribute food to beggars alongside the streets. This experience stretched for a month as we went to provide them with food on every Saturday and Sunday for an entire month. Due to the current pandemic we had dry food items already packaged into containers or foil papers to be separately distributed to each person.

LO3:Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Due to endless submissions and deadlines that had to be reached it was difficult for us to make time for such activities so we came up with a plan to keep a fixed day and time for each week to get the food prepared and then to distribute it. As an IB learner, it was easy for me to plan everything and stick to a schedule that I made for myself to follow the plan of this experience. As I started this experience in the later part of my CAS, there was another experience that I was performing at the same time. Due to this I had to be very specific of the time and had to stick to a schedule I created. The planning of this experience was simple but the execution was challenging, I had to inform the cook beforehand and once the food had been prepared and packed I had to leave all my work pending and distribute the food first. After this experience I learned how to plan everything all by yourself and how important it is to communicate with people you work with at every step of the way.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

I performed this activity with a peer from my grade and I had to manage my timings in an order which she was also comfortable with. Although this experience was not with a big group of people, I had to collaborate with my peer, the cook and had to make time during the early afternoon when we could reach out to as many beggars as we could.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The bigger issue that I am trying to address here is hunger. World hunger is a very vital subject that needs to be catered. Lack of food leads to undernourishment of kids which results in malnutrition which is a very common condition amongst beggars. More than half of the deaths are due to hunger amongst the poor people who are unable to provide for their family. I intended to provide food to the children more rather than the adults as they manage some food for themselves whereas the kids suffer and require maximum food at this age.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

A few ethical issues that can be identified here are poverty and inequality. To some extent discrimination can also be recognised. Every individual requires food to consume and it is a basic human right.

My choices would directly affect them as the food I choose to provide them will be consumed by them. I tried my best to not provide food that is unhealthy. I decided to provide food that gives them energy and helps in their growth and development. I think all of us should understand that food is a basic necessity for every individual be it kid, adult, rich or poor and we should provide them with food from time to time.
