CAS Experience 5: Cleaning Dumas Beach

The experience was to clean a portion of Dumas Beach in order to give back to the society. I assembled a group of friends and we went to Dumas Beach and cleaned it. It felt really good to give back to the society, because we, humans are the ones that polluted it, not realizing that it is a part of the planet and every living thing has an equal right to it.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

To clean the Dumas beach during the COVID-19 era required a lot of planning. We had to take permission from the police because we had to clean the beach on weekends. We had cleaned beaches previously, courtesy to the school, so we knew how to go about it and how to clean the beach and what materials we required.

Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment and perseverance towards CAS

Cleaned an entire area of the beach, separated biodegradable and recyclable waste. We cleaned the dry part of the beach and the wet part of the beach. In the video, you can see how the beach looked before and after we cleaned it.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

I went with a group of friends. Had I gone alone, it would have taken me hours to clean the part of the beach that we 4 achieved together in about 45 minutes. This means that if we all work together, we can reduce the amount of work we do, while still doing our part for the society.

Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below water and Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land.

Due to pollution on the beach the animals eat the garbage and much of it is not digestible, hence they die, and during high tides, some of the waste also goes into the oceans which kills the fish, tortoises and other underwater life forms. When we cleaned the beach we made sure to do our best to clean the area, so that none of the animal or aquatic creatures eat it.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

In some way or the other, it was us who polluted the beach because we also use plastic and create garbage, so we did our part and cleaned the beach. Also, because I understood the effect it has on the environment and animals, I have started using a paper straw and drinking from glass bottles in order to decrease the amount of waste I produce as an individual.

To conclude, it was a really enlightening experience and I understood the impact of my actions and I will definitely try to reduce garbage on my part.
