Learning and using SQL

LEARNING SQL: CREATIVITY, SERVICE

SQL stands for structured query language. It is a type of query language and is one of the most used programming languages in the world, especially by big businesses and corporations. Hence, SQL is an important skill which will help me in my career and so I decided to learn it.

L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Learning SQL is an area of self development for me. While learning this language, I figured that I am not so good in such skills, as it was new to me. Hence, this has become a potential area of growth for me. I was dedicated towards it for 3 months and now I know important codes and queries in SQL.

L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken in developing new skills

As I mentioned above, I am not comfortable with such coding and programming languages, in fact I disliked them. But sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone in order to learn new skills. During the duration of 3 months, I faced challenges. Firstly, I had to learn some basics of CS, which was very confusing. I also faced difficulty in understanding where to apply a particular query and why so? During practice problems sometimes it was difficult to understand the context and which query would be relevant there.

 L4-commitment to and perseverance

I knew that learning SQL or any other programming language would take up my time. It took me a little over 3 months to learn it properly. It requires commitment and perseverance. Many people would leave it after they face a few or even one challenge, but I knew that I had to accomplish it as ultimately it would have been beneficial to me. I made a schedule for SQL practice daily at night, for 30 mins to 1 hour. On weekends, sometimes I did nothing but this. I also maintained a doc in which I have all my self-made notes. This commitment also helped me to serve a local firm. I helped some people there in using tally and sql.

This has increased my knowledge base and I feel satisfied with what I have done. Moreover, with this skill, I now have many opportunities to do a project using it, which I am planning to do.
