Psychology Club: (project: C&S)

L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:

Psychology was a subject I was interested in but I couldn’t choose it due to the subject selection restrictions, thats why I thought of starting a club based on psychology. My interest acted as a strength which made me disciplined towards the club. The area of growth was that because I did not choose psychology as a subject, I did not had enough knowledge to convey to the club members, that why sometimes during club sessions I used to get anxiety because I used to think that what i was speaking was incorrect. To overcome this

L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken in developing new skills:

The challenge undertaken was that because I did not choose psychology as my DP subject, sometimes while conveying information to the club members, I used to fumble and feel anxious which used to make me stammer. I overcame this challenge by being 100% prepared for the session and I also used to practice mock/trial sessions with other co-presidents of psychology club. This made me feel more confident and prepared in the actual club session.

L3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:

Me along with other co-presidents prepared a google sheet in which we used to do everything including brainstorming about club session topics, marking attendance, researching about the selected topic, planning about the service component and many more. Because i am usually an organized person, it was convenient for me to maintain that sheet.

L4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:

  • We used to have sessions bimonthly because of which we had to consistently put efforts to make the ppt’s for the sessions. Everything went well in 11th, but in 12th because we had a lot of other submissions; IA’s CAS, EE, it became a little difficult to manage time and show commitment. Because of this issue, in 12th term 2 we elected/ choose vice presidents and asked them to help us to plan sessions. This reduced our work load and also helped us to focus more on our IBDP studies.

L5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:

  • Working with others helped me make new friends and it also helped me to develop collaboration skills and understanding skills because sometimes due to difference in opinions, we had small conflits, this helped me to improve my understanding towards others and understand their perspectives as well. Due to the group work, it also reduced our work pressure.

L6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:

The service component of the project mainly focused on the global issues like mental health, anxiety, depression etc. We used instagram to post weekly posts regarding these topics and also attached a google form on our bio in which people could post anonymous questions related to mental health or could also demand a particular topic for our posts. All of this increased our engagement with the global issue; mental health.

We also organized ‘Mental Health awareness day’. In this event we catered to important issues like stress, anger management, grief and depression. We made separate google meet links for each issue and participants could join any meet link. In the meet link we had different activities for each issue like: guided meditation, art based therapy, emotions jar and Cathartic letter writing. By this event, we helped people around us get more educated about these topics. We also gave them tips/suggestions to deal with such problems. We asked our school wellbeing counsellors to help us lead the since they are experienced and they would make sure whatever content is being delivered is accurate and reliable. Since this event came under the service component, we did demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance like depression, anxiety, stress etc.

L7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:

Because psychology is a very sensitive subject, there were a lot of ethical issues involved. For example, in one of our sessions the topic was “psychology behind religions”, this caused a lot of havok in the session because everyone had different perspectives. We shouldn’t have chosen this topic because of its ethical considerations. It did not affect me, but it affected the club members and so they suggested not to have a discussion on such naive topics. We mainly choose this topic to increase participation but the outcome came very different from what we expected.
