Gyming (6)

Introduction

I wanted to get in better physical shape due to the lockdown, I had tried many things and achieved some goals, however, this experience was majorly different because this wasn’t a one-time goal, but a relatively long-term practice.

I knew before I even stepped into the gym that I would have trouble continuing this due to a lack of motivation. I immediately set out to find someone to accompany me, so I asked my brother (who does gyms himself) to train me and push me to go to the gym everyday. If I hadn’t asked him, I’m sure I would’ve quit in 2 days, but because of him, I could go for just over a month without skipping a day.

It was extremely challenging to keep up with my brother during the first 10-15 days, as he continued his fitness regime and I tried to copy him the best I could. As my brother did exercises all by himself, it was mostly all basic exercise done in a more intense fashion. I eventually was able to mirror him perfectly, and keep up with the exercises, however, it was still very rigorous for me. I feel like music played an extremely important role as I could push myself further while listening to even randomly queued music on Spotify.

As this was a long-term activity, there were many instances where I had second thoughts and / or wanted to stop, but as it gradually became easier to follow the routine, the second thoughts were also decreasing. While I still don’t enjoy gyming, It seems I’m getting more used to the physical exertion.

It is extremely difficult for me to collaborate with different people, but because it was my brother who is always approachable to me, the communication was always there and that really helped my motivation, seeing as he could always do the workout with ease made me feel like I should be able to do that also, I felt more motivated working collaboratively with my brother and achieved more than I thought I would.

Conclusion

I became more confident in myself and my physical fitness as it slowly became easier for me to do certain exercises, it was a very enriching experience *sometimes*, while you work diligently and endure the pain and hope you can do more reps than yesterday.
