Up-cycling old clothes and learning how to stick/sew

Fashion is something that interests me a lot, over the course of summer vacation I started to learn stitching and sewing and sewing from my grandmother and online youtube videos. I used my old clothes that I am not wearing anymore and upcycled it to make bags, skirts and dresses.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

I had never before tried stitching or sewing so It was a completely new experience for me. There were many challenges I faced while making garments like shortage of materials, cutting the material in the wrong manner or not understanding how to connect two materials together. Throughout this experience my grandmother who is a fashion expert and owns a sewing machine taught me techniques and art of fashion designing. Using a sewing machine was completely new for me so I found myself stuck in between sewing two sections of cloths or sometimes the seams were not in a proper straight line. After watching a few online videos and tips from my grandmother I now find sewing and stitching comparatively easy.

LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The experience started with me cleaning my closet and piling clothes that I no longer wear so I decided to surf through Pinterest to find ways in which I can DIY the clothes I no longer wear. I found a few easy and fashionable options so I researched more into it and understood how fashion garments are made and assembled. So after that I first sketched the garments outline on a piece of paper and after that used it to make final cuts on the materials. This process was something I really enjoyed doing.

LO4:Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Upcycling a piece of cloth needs a lot of dedication and hardwork, and leaving the design in between will just break a link and the next time you start doing it you will feel lost and stuck. Due to other school work and events there were times when I was not able to complete the garment in a day or two and the next time while continuing I had completely forgotten where i left off. I created a schedule of investing 1 hour a day on completing the fashion garment.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

As mentioned before, I was working with my grandmother so there were instances where she constantly kept interfering while I was trying a new semn or pattern, but It was for my own good and to make my garment more finished. Working collaboratively helped me get a lot of idea into what exactly I am doing as well as she taught me how to use a sewing machine which is very difficult to learn from online videos. It was hard to stay patient at times but doing it together made the whole process efficient and proficient.

To conclude, this experience was very insightful as Fashion designing is a possible career option for me. It gave me an opportunity to understand and learn fashion and upcycle old clothes into trendy garments.
