Cleaning up waste from public places and beach (CAS 7)

India produces around 62 million tons every year and only 70% of it is collected and treated, the other forms of waste are dumped irrepressibly. Most of it can be seen thrown around on the street and in public places which produces a bad stench and also degrades the soul due to the heavy amounts of plastic waste

I am currently a member of the rotary club in which they announced they were initiating a cleaning program so I and my group of friends took part in it where we went to clean out places like the dumas beach and public parks from 5th July to 27th July in which we regularly tried to go out to these program on every weekend.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I had to show commitment throughout this activity as we had decided to go on these programs on a weekly basis every weekend but this was during a busy time in school and I also had plans made with my friends but we had to make time for this activity and commit to complete this program on a weekly basis to provide for my community.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

During this activity we had to work as a group as working alone wouldn’t make much of a difference when dealing with this type of labour, but working in groups can usually be chaotic and messy but we didn’t have to deal with this issue as everyone in my group was committed enough to communicate and interact with each other to make time and work together for the betterment of our community.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The issue that we tackled with this activity is land pollution which is a big threat to nature and humanity on the global level which makes it very significant, it can negatively affect the ecosystem and also us humans by causing the development of breathing disorders and skin diseases and much more. We as a group tried to solve this issue on the individual level by cleaning up the plastic waste we found on beaches and public parks.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and action

I had to understand my responsibilities as a human to clean up the waste that I produce and I had to recognize the ethics of actions. Initially, I was not gonna take part in this activity as I had no motivation to do so but then I realized the importance of actions towards this planet.

To conclude, i’d like to say that I learnt the learner profiles caring and communicator. Caring as I showed compassion and empathy towards my planet by cleaning up the waste we saw at places and communicator as I had to communicate with group members and the rotary club. I believe that this activity was a major success and it was great working for the rotary club, this whole activity gave me a sense of accomplishment as I provided something back to my planet.
